The lagging strand is the DNA strand replicated in the 3′ to 5′ direction during DNA replication from a template strand. It is synthesized in fragments. The discontinuous replication results in several short segments which are called Okazaki fragments.

The lagging strand is synthesized in short, separated segments.

The lagging strand is called the lagging strand because there is a substantial delay in the replication of that strand relative to the leading strand. That is, it literally "lags" behind the leading strand in the course of dsDNA replication. DNA strands are antiparallel. DNA polymerase can work continuously toward the replication fork only on one strand (the leading strand) while on the other strand (the lagging strand) it must proceed away from the replication fork.
